Some people spend years around religion and still never understand the new birth. They may attend church, know Bible words, respect Christian values, and try to live a decent life. But Jesus did not tell Nicodemus, a deeply religious man, that he needed better habits. He told him, “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

That statement cuts through every false hope. Being born again is not joining a church. It is not being baptized. It is not turning over a new leaf. It is not becoming more religious. To be born again means God gives spiritual life to a sinner who was dead in sin.

Nicodemus was confused. He asked how a man could be born when he is old. Jesus was not speaking of physical birth. He was speaking of a spiritual birth that only God can produce. A person enters earthly life by physical birth. A person enters spiritual life by the new birth.

This matters because man’s deepest problem is not lack of religion. It is sin. Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Sin separates man from God. No amount of good behavior can erase it. No religious ceremony can remove it. A sinner does not need improvement first. He needs life from God.

Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy.” That is the heart of salvation. God does not save sinners because they have earned it. He saves according to His mercy.

The new birth is a work of God’s grace. It is not produced by water, works, church membership, family heritage, or human effort. Baptism is important after salvation as obedience to Christ, but baptism does not cause the new birth. A church roll cannot give life to the soul. Only God can do that.

First Peter 1:23 says believers have been “born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.” God uses His Word to show us our sin, reveal Christ, and call us to faith.

Jesus made the way of salvation plain in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” The sinner is not saved by trying harder. He is saved by believing in Jesus Christ.

To be born again means you have trusted Christ as Savior. You believe He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again. You stop resting in yourself and rest in Him. When God saves, He forgives, gives eternal life, and makes the believer a new creature.

The new birth does not make a person sinless, but it does make him new. He has a new Lord, a new direction, a new hope, and a new desire to obey. He should follow Christ in baptism, unite with a true New Testament church, learn the Word, worship with God’s people, and grow in grace.

But none of those things replace the new birth. They follow it.

So the question is not, “Am I religious?” It is not, “Have I been baptized?” It is not, “Do people think I am a good person?”

The question is, “Have I been born again?”

Do not rest your soul on religion, morality, baptism, or church membership. Rest in Christ. Come to Him by faith. Trust the Savior who died and rose again.

Jesus said, “You must be born again.”

Do not ignore that call.

Believe on Christ, and receive the life only He can give.
